Hardware Vault Upgrade Paths: Moving Your Digital Inheritance to a New Device

If you are planning a hardware vault upgrade, the direct answer is this: you do not move the wallet itself—you move the recovery seed phrase, and you do so carefully, using the new device’s own setup process. Whether you are upgrading from an older Trezor model to a newer one, or moving from one brand to another, the underlying principle is identical: your crypto assets live on the blockchain, not on the device. The hardware vault only stores the private keys derived from your seed. Therefore, the safest upgrade path involves generating a new seed on the new device, or restoring your existing seed onto it, and then verifying that the addresses match before sending any funds.

Understanding What Actually Transfers

Before you touch any hardware, it helps to clarify what is being upgraded. A hardware wallet is a signing device, not a storage container. Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, and the device holds the cryptographic keys that authorize transactions. When you upgrade, you are replacing the device that holds those keys. There are two fundamental paths:
  • Seed migration: You enter your existing 12, 18, or 24-word recovery phrase into the new device. This replicates your current keys, so you keep the same addresses and transaction history.

Using the Recovery Seed

The most common upgrade path is to use the recovery seed from your old device. You will connect the new device, select “Recover wallet,” and enter your existing seed phrase using the device’s on-screen keyboard. This is secure because the seed never touches your computer’s operating system—it is typed directly on the device. After recovery, you should see the same account balances and addresses in Trezor Suite.

Verifying Before You Dispose of the Old Device

After restoring, do not immediately wipe the old device. Instead, generate a receiving address on the new device and compare it to an address from the old device. They should match if the seed was entered correctly. Only after confirming this on at least one account should you wipe the old device using its factory reset option.

This is the most secure but most labor-intensive upgrade path. It is recommended if you suspect your old seed has been compromised, or if you are consolidating multiple old wallets into one new device.

Initialize the New Device

Connect the new hardware wallet and choose “Create new wallet.” The device will generate a new seed phrase. Write it down on the included recovery card and store it in a secure location. Never photograph it or type it into any app.

Send Funds from Old to New
